Cognizant has released a Physical AI Platform-as-a-Service targeting manufacturers that want to move beyond isolated AI pilots. The platform, built on the company's Cognizant Intelligence Spine, is intended to connect sensors, robotics, factory automation and other operational systems through a unified intelligence layer while keeping data and institutional knowledge under enterprise control.
In an interview with Australian Manufacturing, Cognizant Managing Director for ANZ Carla Ramchand described how the platform differs from existing industrial AI tools. "Many AI tools today analyse data, predict faults, or recommend what someone should do next," Ramchand said. "Physical AI takes that step further by enabling machines to understand their environment and context, provide reason for changing conditions, and act in real time."
Ramchand said the shift is being enabled by the development of advanced sensors, robotics, multimodal AI and low-latency connectivity.
Why It Matters
Australian manufacturers operating mixed-technology environments face a specific integration challenge. As Ramchand noted, "Legacy equipment operates alongside newer sensors, robots and digital platforms, while data ownership and connectivity can vary across." That fragmentation has made it difficult to deploy AI consistently across production lines or multiple sites.
Cognizant's position is that replacing equipment is not the answer. "Making existing equipment more connected and intelligent should be the focus of factories and not replacing every machine," Ramchand said. The company also cautioned against treating full automation as the end goal: "The goal should not be complete automation."

The platform is described as sovereign, meaning manufacturers retain control over the systems shaping their operations. "Manufacturers must have control over the data, rules, and institutional knowledge shaping their systems," Ramchand said.
On deployment, Cognizant recommends a staged approach. "Manufacturers need to focus on targeting one clear result, prove it works safely, then roll the same system out to other lines and sites," Ramchand said.
Interoperability is a stated design priority. "Interoperability is essential because most factories run on a mix of old and new technology," Ramchand said.

Manufacturers globally have been running AI pilots for several years, but scaling those pilots across full production environments has proven difficult. The gap between a proof-of-concept and a production-wide deployment typically involves data fragmentation, inconsistent connectivity and the challenge of integrating systems that were never designed to communicate with each other.
Cognizant's platform is positioned as an attempt to address that scaling problem by providing a common layer across disparate systems rather than requiring manufacturers to standardise their hardware first.
What Comes Next
Cognizant has not disclosed a public timeline for further platform releases or named specific Australian manufacturing clients. The company said the platform is available now as a service offering. Australian manufacturers considering adoption would also need to account for obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 and any sector-specific data governance requirements administered by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
